What’s the difference between a Registered Dietitian and a Nutritionist?
There is a huge difference between a Registered Dietitian (RD) and a Nutritionist. The biggest difference is that the RD title is legally protected and the accreditation, education, experience and accountability. Dietitians are accountable to provincial regulatory bodies for their professional conduct and the care they provide. Dietitians are held accountable and maintain an ethical practice conduct. Nutritionists are not regulated by a unifying body and are not held accountable for their services, which means if a Nutritionist gives you bad advice or even causes harm to you, that they are not held responsible whereas a Registered Dietitian is. This question is a bit tricky to answer. Dietitian services are covered by insurance plans, but this may not always be the case as it will ultimately depend on your insurance program and the specifics of it. We always encourage you to get in touch with your insurance provider or the insurance package pamphlet to be 100% sure.
